What is going on in this painting?

Since 1977, ArtWorks has been engaging children in dynamic conversations that start with a simple open-ended question, “What is going on in this art work?” Using an inquiry-based approach, students discuss and interpret works of art. They develop their own voices in responding to art as they strengthen communication and critical thinking skills. ArtWorks fosters multiple perspectives and reflections that often extend to other subjects and beyond the world of art. Help start the conversation.

Visual literacy for
NYC public elementary schools

ArtWorks offers our visual literacy program to underserved public schools throughout NYC’s five boroughs. Volunteer instructors lead classroom workshops that culminate in a guided visit to either The Met Museum or the Brooklyn Museum.  The art in our program reflects NYC’s diverse school population with art from different cultures, from antiquity to present day. ArtWorks is free of charge to NYC public elementary schools. ArtWorks NYC is a nonprofit organization. Learn more about us.

“I like looking at portraits.
My self-portrait would be
abstract to show you how I see
myself in my head, not how you
see me with your eyes.”
